The concepts covered include Geometry (2D and 3D shapes), Patterns in addition, exploring basic multiplication, and beginning fractions. We will have social games, math challenges, math puzzles, and a lego challenge each day to explore these concepts. Students will also be shown an online math game daily that they can explore at home after our meeting time as well as a printed activity or puzzle to continue to solve at home if students would like to extend their play beyond our meeting time.
Materials provided: We will send a printable pdf for students to print before camp. Students will also make use of a small set of legos during the camp. For students who have legos available, please use your own legos. We have a few small packets of legos available for students who do not have access to legos to borrow. We ask that parents pick up these packets (contactless pick up) from the home of the camp director in East Lansing. Address will be provided after registration. Packets should be returned after the camp.
Math Explorers

MathCounts Competition Camp (Geared for students in grades 6-8)
Target Audience: students who would like to grow in mathematical problem solving using materials from MathCounts competition for middle school students
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays August 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 4-5pm ET
Instructor: Christopher Potvin
Enrollment: Minimum of 6 students to run; Maximum of 15 students.
Format: facilitated online course twice a week for five sessions; students will use Zoom and some online resources. Students will also receive problems for additional exploration outside of the class meetings. All zoom sessions will be facilitated by instructor Christopher Potvin and a camp assistant.
Description: This camp will focus on providing challenging problem solving opportunities for middle school students, based on the national MathCounts competition resources. Students should be prepared to spend about ½ hour per session working on assigned problems prior to each camp meeting. Students should test their readiness for this camp by solving at least half of the problems on the attached “MathCounts WarmUp”. If students are able to solve 8 or more, then the camp may not be a good level of challenge for them.
Math Puzzling (Geared for students in grades 5-6)
Target Audience: Students entering grades 6-8 who would like to improve their skills in mathematical problem solving. We encourage students to try the problems in the MathCounts Warmup; students who are able to solve at least half of these problems independently will be best prepared to benefit from the camp.
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 11, 13, 18, 20, and 25 (5 sessions total) 4-5pm ET
Instructor: Christopher Potvin, assisted by Jingting Lin
Enrollment: Minimum of 6 students to run; Maximum of 12 students.
Format: facilitated online course for five hour long session; students will use Zoom and some online resources, including Alcumus from the Art of Problem Solving. Description: On a popular game show, “Let’s Make a Deal”, host Monty Hall showed you three doors (A,B,C). Behind two were goats and behind the third, a brand new car. After you picked Door A on a hunch, Monty Hall showed you a goat behind Door C. Then, out of grace and generosity, he gave you the option to switch your choice to Door B. Should you switch doors or stay with Door A? This question perplexed the contestants, the public, and educators for many years, but has a simple mathematical solution. If it interests you, come to this camp where we will discover hidden mathematics behind this and many other puzzles and riddles.
Math Puzzle Alpha Challenge Mac Os Catalina
There are no particular mathematical prerequisites for this camp, only an appetite for logical thought and a willingness to be hopelessly confused along the way. The target audience will be students who are approximately ages 10-12, but the primary determinant of learning for students of any age will be a willingness to think through challenging and interesting puzzles.

Math Puzzle Alpha Challenge Mac Os 11
This camp will start with an introduction to fractions and related ideas, using individual and group activities for students to explore various definitions and ways to think about a fraction, particularly unit fractions. The goal is to encourage students to understand reciprocals, and the ideas behind arithmetic with fractions using self-explorations and discussions. Prerequisite knowledge includes understanding of the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with whole numbers. No formal knowledge of fractions is required. This camp will also provide reinforcement for students who have begun work on arithmetic with fractions.
Algebraic Connections and Applications
Target Audience: students entering Algebra 1 next year OR students who lost instructional time in Algebra 1 this year.
Math Puzzle Alpha Challenge Mac Os X
Time: Monday-Friday, June 8-12, 2-3 pm Eastern Time
Instructor: Kellie Stilson
Enrollment: Minimum of 5 students to run; Maximum of 16 students.
Format: facilitated online course daily for one week; students will use Zoom and Desmos, a free online graphing calculator. All zoom sessions will be facilitated by instructor Kellie Stilson and a camp assistant.
Description: This math camp will meet by zoom for one hour Monday-Friday. Students will use Desmos, a free online graphing calculator program and virtual instruction to strengthen number sense, learn function basics, and practice pattern finding and generalizations. This will take place through working with numbers and variables to model real life situations. For example, students will model the rate at which water fills containers of various shapes and sizes and find an equation to determine how many rubber bands are needed to safely drop a Barbie from a balcony without hitting her head! Students should have some familiarity with graphing lines, and should be fluent with solving one-step equations (For example, 4x = 12). Students will come away from camp with a greater awareness of math in their world, supplemental online resources for continued learning, and a basic foundation for Algebra 1.
